The target is to quickly produce enough different compound analogs to get sufficient biological data points for a timely decision on the project in six months during project reviews which allows management to decide whether to continue a project or terminate it. Literature search through patents and journals for biological data on close relatives of new targets, synthetic techniques used to make similar analogs ; sourcing and purchasing chemical reagents, their availability, the price ranges, the reliability of the vendor and quality of product based on experience is taken into account; Designing and executing chemical reactions to achieve desired targets; characterization of reaction intermediates and products to determine success of reactions using nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR), Liquid chromatography Mass spectrometry (LC-MS)to determine molecular weights are those of desired compounds, High pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)to determine the purity of the produt; keeping and updated and detailed electronic notebook as a reference and for intellectual property purposes. Design and execution of multi-step synthesis of molecules designed for anti-bacterial activity (20 mg - 10g scale); Did both traditional and solid-phase peptide synthesis using automated peptide synthesizer; microwave assisted organic synthesis; Keep up-to-date records in electronic notebooks; characterize synthetic products using analytical techniques such as LCMS, NMR, HPLC, TLC; Present work during group meetings and give annual company-wide seminar; Qualitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) interpretations including MICs,IC50, protein binding, early stage acute toxicity (rats and mice); Structure-base drug design discussions with discovery technologies.
