Daily Duties at Michigan Department Of Transportation:
During the first year, reviewed local agency highway design improvements prepared by private engineering consultants such as construction plans, specifications and cost estimates for conformance with MDOT design standards, prepared construction bid packages for programming, advertising, letting and contract award and participated in field grade inspection meetings. In the second year, as part of an in-house 7-person design team, prepared design plans and specifications for highway improvement projects using Interactive Graphics Roadway Design System (IGRDS) and Microstation computer software. As one specific example, utilized IGRDS to design improvements to 5.7 miles of existing U.S.-27N of Lansing, MI. The main scope of work involved rubblizing (breaking up) the concrete pavement and overlaying it with asphalt concrete. For the remaining years, coordinated and administered highway construction projects designed by private engineering consultants. Developed scope of work and the project schedule, estimated person-hours and costs of consultant services, and reviewed bid packages for accuracy and compliance with MDOT standards. Scheduled milestone meetings between the consultants, MDOT staff, local agency officials and others. Reviewed plans, special provisions, special details, quantity estimates, and pay items for accuracy. Monitored the consultant’s work progress, reviewed payment vouchers and recommended approval of payment to consultants.
