Daily Duties at The Washington Post Express:
- Would go in from 9am to 5pm three days a week and do research for my own articles as well as for articles printed in the paper that were being converted to web format. This involved obtaining links to photos, websites, etc. to incorporate into the article to be printed onto the web. I also assisted in the creation of their happy hour/specials database they now have up and running on the website. It took me my entire time spent at the post to collect information from every bar and restaurant I could find in the DC/MD/VA area. This involved scanning streets on google maps and in person, creating a list of every single restaurant and bar, separating them into neighborhoods, obtaining whatever information was listed on their websites and then calling each and ever establishment to inquire about their happy hours, specials, popular items, events, etc. I would form rapport with each location manager and eventually inputted it all into an excel spreadsheet that I created which ultimately turned into their searchable database that they now have on their website. I also published 2 articles about the food industry in DC. I also did some work reformatting text with codes, etc. to be put on the web. Didn't get much experience with that but they taught me a little bit.
What they like about The Washington Post Express:
You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
