Daily Duties at Mercury Insurance Company:
Under general supervision, coordinates and supervises claims handling activities and operations within a specified unit. Assists in the direction of the claims branch to minimize indemnity and expense impact, to ensure appropriate reserve levels, and to implement claims objectives, policies and procedures. Supervise the professional staff in the handling of complex bodily injury and property claims within specified unit by; assigning new and transferred losses to staff, reviewing initial investigations, evaluations, demands, authority for settlement, reserve recommendations, etc., providing guidance and recommending action plans. Assist in the development of basic objectives, procedures and operations of the branch; analyze operating results relative to established guidelines and take appropriate action to improve performance and productivity. Monitor and review unit files on diary system in order to ensure adherence to Company policies and procedures. Screen files for possible coverage problems, fraudulent or inflated claims or questionable activity and transfer file to appropriate department for further investigation. Develop and recommend specific reserve, settlement and expense authority level for subordinates; may extend settlement authority limits to adjusters. Represent the Company and branch in relationships with consumers, government agencies, independent vendors and agents. May perform any one or all of the duties of subordinates, usually settling complex, high value claims; refer extremely complex claims to appropriate superior. Maintain production records and prepare reports for management regarding unit operations, production and expenses as necessary. May coordinate work and payment for use of independent contractors for investigative purposes. Keep abreast of current Company policy, claims developments, and procedural changes and inform subordinates as necessary. In-depth knowledge of established Company policies and procedures and claims operations, and the ability to apply such knowledge in an administrative/supervisory capacity. Able to correspond effectively and professionally with agents, insureds, attorneys, etc. Work is of high technical nature and requires the ability necessary to analyze, interpret and direct the resolution of complex claims. Requires the constant exercise of independent judgment with respect to staff and claims issues which may have a very significant impact on the Company in areas such as costs, consumer loyalty, employee relations and legal complications.
