Daily Duties at Contract Positions:

Responsibilities across these industries included general ledger accounting, auditing, Sarbanes-Oxley control testing, financial statement preparation. I reviewed expense reports for accuracy. I reconciled commission packages for employees at a travel agency. I did expense analysis for the travel company over a monthly and yearly basis. FINANCIAL ANALYST I worked with the Treasury and Security Department to help oversee and maintain Unit Investment Trust accounts, (UIT). I reconciled the UITs between GL system and the Depository Trust Company trading system. I verified all transactions for each UIT that I was responsible for on a daily basis. Often I would investigate and reconcile principal cash breaks, income cash breaks, and share breaks between the 2 GL systems. Daily transactions within the funds included the redemption of units, the sale of shares, cash dividends, stock splits, stock divestitures, and mergers. EXPERIENCED ASSOCIATE ASSURANCE/ FINANCIAL SERVICES I was brought on board as an Experienced Associate because of my brokerage experience and assigned to Financial Services. There I performed auditing services and provided assurance on company financial statements. To provide assurance I would test samples from various Financial Statement accounts and reconcile them to the companies accounting records. I would then document the results of my testing to a Lotus Notes database for that client. I also performed inventory audits for certain clients to make sure the physical inventory matched the balance sheet inventory. I also performed walkthroughs of clients internal controls to evaluate the effectiveness of design. AUDITING PROFESSIONAL Sarbanes-Oxley Program Office to test the revenue controls of the various departments including sales, refunds, and cancellation of services. I would call the various Control Owners of the controls that I was assigned to test and request evidence for those controls. Evidence would often include the appropriate signatures approving a sale, a refund, or a cancellation. All control test results would be documented on excel files and orally presented to the SOX Program Office. When a control failed, the control testers were in charge of remediating the control with the Control Owners. New procedures would have to be written and the new control test steps would have to be documented and placed in the official company policy and procedures manual for future internal control testing. CONTROLLER I joined the finance department because their accounting records were months behind and they needed help updating the accounting records. One of my main responsibilities included coding expenses to the right accounts using the Great Plains accounting system. I also had to determine what was an expense and what was a capital asset that could be depreciated. After recording the fixed assets I calculated the depreciation monthly. I also reconciled 8 separate cash accounts going back 12 months. This project took at least a month or so to reconcile and many adjusting entries had to be prepared as cash was recorded in the wrong accounts often. I also prepared balance sheet reconciliations where I had to identify what made up each accounts balance. SENIOR ANALYST I again worked for the Sarbanes-Oxley Department. I helped with year end testing of accounting controls and documented my results on Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Policy and procedure manuals were also updated as necessary.

What they like about Contract Positions:

Working in an organization that is technologically advanced, creative, and innovative is critical in your assessment of hiring companies. Less important to you are stability of the organization, the length of time an organization has been in business, and the business' plans for the future. You prefer a fast-moving company that will take risks to achieve its goals and objectives. The length of time the company has been in business is irrelevant. Maintaining status quo is unnecessary. You thrive on change, uncertainty and the upside of potential business risks, especially those associated with innovation. Stability for the long haul is not nearly as important as is working in an atmosphere that is charged with a sense of urgency and constant change.
