Daily Duties at United States Postal Service:
Primary tasks consisted of processing Priority and First Class mail during the evening hours (11pm to 7:30am) Worked in the Secondary Area (Bundle Sort 3 and 4). Priority mail is electronically scanned or manually keyed by the Clerks. As the mail is distributed to its designated shoots (slides) I would place the mail in either mail sacks or GPCs (General Purpose Carts). When they where filled I would remove them and replace them with another until all the mail had been cleared from the sorter. Dispatch times are critical for Priority Mail. Once the sorter has been cleared of mail, the carts are closed up and lined up for the mailhandlers to take them to the loading docks to be loaded onto outgoing mail trailers. The clerks then setup mail sacks for the oncoming shift. Occassionally, heavy parcels (non-machineable objects) get into the automated sorter system, the clerk will cull out these items and place them into a rolling cart, when full they place a NMO placquard on the cart and place it on the mechanical loop that runs throughout the facility. This rolling cart will be removed by the mailhandlers in the NMO area where they will process the items. At Bundle Sorter 1 and 2, the Priority and First Class Mail is electronically scanned or manually keyed by the Clerks. The difference in this area is that the mail is dumped into the system via mechanical dumpers by the mailhandlers, the clerks either use mail sacks or large boxes for the designated zipcodes. When the sacks or boxes are full they are removed and replaced with another until all mail is cleared from the sorter. Once all the mail has been cleared, clerks pull all boxes and mail sacks and line them up for the mailhandlers to take to the loading docks to be placed on outgoing mail trailers. Clerks then setup the boxes for the oncoming shift. Additionally, in the Bundle Sorter 1 and 2 area, clerks will place Priority and First Class Mail in mail sacks for specific zipcodes starting with 320 and 322 (Jacksonville), as well as 323 (Tallahassee). These have designated dispatch times as well, once full they are closed, placed in a rolling cart and placed in a specific area for the mailhandlers to take them to the loading dock and then loaded onto outgoing mail trailers.
What they like about United States Postal Service:
You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
