Daily Duties at Globe Net Capital:
I was brought in to GlobeNet to build the required IT infrastructure, hire the Software Development and Operation teams. When I came on board, I was told that they were nearly finished building the trading system. They had outsourced the entire project to a local company. I was told the team we hired internally would just maintain the system. When the new trading system was delivered and we ran speed tests on it, it could only perform 17 trades per second. Our requirements were 700 trades per second and I promptly fired the company that developed this so called trading system. I then went out and found a guy who used to work the Chicago Board of Trade as a Trading Systems Developer. He just happened to live locally and was currently writing Medical Software. After several interviews with him, I made him an offer which he accepted. I hired several other supporting software developers and we set out to design a real trading system. I just six months we had our infrastructure fully in place and our home grown trading system was up and running performing 5000 trades per second. During this time we were also preparing to build out a new office location which meant that we had to build a Computer Operations and Data Center. In addition to all this planning and testing, I was making 2-3 trips a week with Business Development and the CEO to Wall Street and New Jersey as we tried to sell our new technology to the big trading organizations. I was acting as a Sales Engineer since I helped design the new trading system; I intimately understood the business rules of the system and could explain it to the traders in terms they understood. I had a budget of about $4mm and 30 IT Staff

Working for a company with an emphasis on social values and helping society is a clear and important priority for you - a critical factor in who you choose to work for. In contrast to other factors, you place an organization's reputation for fairness and concern for the community above most other aspects of the company. As you search for a new job opportunity, it is usually possible to find out if the company is involved in the community and/or if it is addressing problems and issues in society. Pay special attention to non-profit organizations and those specifically involved in social action. Moreover, speaking with current and former employees should enlighten you to perceptions of the fairness of the company's leaders and the treatment of employees.
