Daily Duties at San Antonio Military Medical Center:

Joint services medical center (Army and Air Forces).Provide human resource assistance to 81 employees on a Post-Surgical Orthopedic Unit, caring for 40 wounded soldiers, in compliance with Department of Defensive Regulations. Serve as a link between Head Nurse and Section Chief of Surgery and employees by handling questions and helping to resolve work-related problems. Review upper departmental directives, to exchange work related information, and coordinate work activities with other departments. Coach and counsel 32 Nurses on advances in orthopedic care, patient safety, and infection control. Provide staff with assistance in performing difficult or complicated procedures. Listen to and resolve staff, patient, and family member complaints regarding patient care, customer service, and personnel. Monitor staff performance to ensure that departmental goals met. Identify staff vacancies. Participant in 33 candidate interviews and the selection of 18 qualified applicants. Train and evaluate personnel to meet current staffing needs. Plan and conduct new employee orientation to foster positive attitude toward organizational objectives. Ensure meeting all fiscal training requirements. Train and counsel 32 personnel on nursing duties and advanced patient care that combine customer service. Deliver three annual ward level in-services to drive performance improvements. Assisted in maintaining 100% staff competency assessments, and attended two yearly leadership courses. Adhere to Department of Nursing policies and procedures, such as maintaining communication between medical staff and department heads by attending department and leadership meetings. Establish work schedules and assignments for staff, according to patient census. Conduct fiscal operations, including staffing budgets, and coordinating contractor hour reports. Aligned performance expectations with organizational goals, and ensured a safe working environment. Subject matter expert on four computerized training healthcare programs. Coordinate team-building activities, while maintaining a safe work environment. Completed three leadership trainings, such as, “The Head Nurse Leadership Course,” “Total Army Performance Evaluation System Course,” and “The Joint Leadership Development Training.” Identified documentation and communication improvements and conducted competency assessments for current staff members. Coordinated with Civilian Employee Labor Relations. Established compliance in a collective bargaining agreement and using Equal Employment Opportunity principles. Served as the Charge Nurse, and oversaw the staff’s performance while sharing skills and knowledge with all employees. Provided assistance in nursing services, such as orthopedic treatments and prescribed medications. Network with coworkers and interdisciplinary teams to meet individual patient needs.
