Daily Duties at United States Postal Service:
As a casual mailhandler I worked in numerous areas of the Jacksonville Network Distribution Center: Northwest Inbound unloading mail trailers and culling out Priority and First Class mail, Irregular Parcel Post (long, heavy and irregular shaped) the remaing parcel post are dumped via mechanical dumpers into the automated sorter system where they are electronically scanned or manually keyed according to destination zipcodes and then loaded into mail sacks or rolling carts to be loaded into outgoing mail trailers to the distribution post offices. Non-machineable objects (large, heavy and/or irregular shaped parcels) are electronically scanned or manually keyed and manually loaded into rolling carts and loaded into outgoing mail trailers to the distribution post offices. Manual Operations of loading letter trays in the RCS (Robotic Collater System). Mass mailing literature in letter trays in manually loaded into the system, electronically scanned and sent to the appropriate robotic collater system which groups palletizes letter trays by zipcodes. If the scanner could not read the zipcode barcode the system will reject the letter tray and send it to the Reject Station. At the Reject Station, the barcode card is replaced with a new card or the plastic pocket holding the card is removed and a new one placed on the outer sleeve at the specified location (at the end of the letter tray) and reintroduced into the RCS automated system. Another task for the manually loader is to ensure that the letter trays have outer sleeves and straps securing the cardboard sleeve to the letter tray. If they do not place when in a separate rolling cart and take them to the Strapping Area. At the Strapping Area the trays are placed in cardboard sleeves, and run through the strapping machine. The newly sleeved and strapped letter trays are then placed into the RCS automated system. Bundle sorters 1 and 2 At this area bulk periodicals (magazines, travel bookets, and a variety of catalogs) are manually loaded into the sorter system by the mailhandler. Manual loading is either by emptying mail sacks or dumping pallets onto a conveyor belt system. Postal Clerks then electronically scan or manually key the zipcode and then the automated sorter will distribute the mail into the appropriate mail sack or large cardboard box. When the boxes are full they are pulled out and replaced with another and then be manually loaded into outgoing mail trailers to the distribution post offices.
What they like about United States Postal Service:
You highly value a work environment built on a formal structure, rules, and regulations. You do not enjoy the unpredictability of shifting priorities and deadlines that upset your routine. You require and enjoy direction, input and accountability as part of your work environment. You have a strong need to participate in making key decisions and feel left out if your superiors or co-workers do not seek your input when making decisions. You thrive on providing good customer service to both internal or external customers, and doing so makes you feel good.
