Daily Duties at University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine:

Core Responsibilities: Help direct research on the molecular basis and potential treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia using tissues from afflicted individuals and animal models of these disorders. Assist in preparation of grant applications to NIH and Alzheimer Association for research on the molecular basis of Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia. Design experiments and supervise their execution by staff technicians and postdoctoral fellows. Select methods, tissues, and reagents for research. Ensure quality of tissue preparations; biochemical, histological, behavioral experiments; and microscope image analysis. Analyze experimental results; write and illustrate progress reports, research papers, and review articles. Present laboratory results and new research trends at local, national, and international meetings. Additional Tasks Undertaken: In addition to the core tasks identified above, I performed many others. I pursued translational implications of laboratory findings and compiled data for that purpose from NCBI and UniProt gene and protein databases; set up collaborations with other investigators in the U.S. and abroad when additional expertise, methods, and/or materials are needed; collaborated with and acted as a neuroanatomical and immunohistochemical consultant to other UPenn labs; served as a brain autopsy leader; helped administer UPenn schizophrenia brain bank and a colony of dysbindin-1 mice; helped organize symposia at national scientific meetings; assisted in recruiting and training new staff; mentored undergraduate and graduate students on independent projects; and taught graduate and medical student neuroanatomy, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy.
