Daily Duties at University Of Pennsylvania Perelman School Of Medicine:
Core Responsibilities: Direct research helping identify or clarify the molecular basis and potential treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia using postmortem tissues from afflicted individuals and animal models of these disorders. Write National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant applications supporting that research by proposing viable new hypotheses in these areas of study, designing experiments to test the new hypotheses, and generating preliminary data consistent with them. Supervise testing of hypotheses by staff technicians and postdoctoral fellows. Select methods, tissues, and reagents for research. Ensure quality of tissue preparations; biochemical, histological, behavioral experiments; and microscope image analysis. Analyze experimental results; write and illustrate progress reports, research papers, and review articles. Present laboratory results and new research trends at local, national, and international meetings. Based on the findings made, identify follow-up research topics, specific aims, and hypotheses for new grants. Additional Tasks Undertaken: In addition to the core tasks identified above, I perform many others. In particular, I pursue translational implications of our laboratory findings and compile data for that purpose from National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and Universal protein Resource (UniProt) gene and protein databases; set up collaborations with other investigators in the U.S. and abroad when further expertise and materials are needed; collaborate and act as a neuroanatomical and immunohistochemical consultant to other UPenn labs; serve as the neuroanatomist responsible for UPenn contributions of postmortem brain tissue to multi-university projects on the genetic basis of schizophrenia; help administer UPenn schizophrenia brain bank and a colony of dysbindin-1 mutant mice that model schizophrenia in some respects; help organize symposia at national scientific meetings; assist in recruiting and training new staff; mentor undergraduate and graduate students on independent projects; teach graduate and medical student neuroanatomy, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy.
