Daily Duties at Huron Hospital:

I was hired to work third shift, from 9pm to 7am. I worked 7 nights on, 7 nights off, every other week. Night shift ran much like any of the two other shifts. We filled orders and then delivered them hourly to the floors. A typical evening began by saying Hello to the few employees in the department. My shift consisted of me and one technician, 2nd shift had 3-4 people. After that, I would help the Pharmacist from 2nd shift clean up any left over problems, wish them a good evening and settle in for my shift. I had 3 objectives every shift I worked. 1.Fill orders and deliver every hour or as needed. 2. Prepare cart doses for the next day. 3. Prepare and deliver meds to Pyxis machines. Pyxis machines are computerized drawers that contain medications that nursing can access and retriveve from. Most nights these objectives were met with some time to spare. Occationally, problems would crop up that made life difficult. If 2nd shift did not go well, I would have to spend time cleaning that up before I could get my work done. As time progressed, I got more proficient, and had more spare time. I asked my supervisor for more work, which met with variable sucess. I was the only Pharmacist during my shifts, I was soley responsible jfor its operation. I tried very hard to handle any and all issues that came my way. I refrained from calling my boss (even though he never minded) unless I thought they would want to know something big was comming. I did this for 5 years, until the hospital closed.

What they like about Huron Hospital:

Working in an organization that is technologically advanced, creative, and innovative is critical in your assessment of hiring companies. Less important to you are stability of the organization, the length of time an organization has been in business, and the business' plans for the future. You prefer a fast-moving company that will take risks to achieve its goals and objectives. The length of time the company has been in business is irrelevant. Maintaining status quo is unnecessary. You thrive on change, uncertainty and the upside of potential business risks, especially those associated with innovation. Stability for the long haul is not nearly as important as is working in an atmosphere that is charged with a sense of urgency and constant change.
