Daily Duties at Best Healthcare Services:

I was initially hired to be the certified pharmacy technician. In that role I would make all the IV medications, restock shelves, and schedule deliveries. As I became more experienced with the business my responsibilities increased. I currently purchase all medications and supplies, manage other employees, meet with sales reps to discuss pricing and all the other activities listed on my resume. It is a small company so I work with a small volume but I am involved in the entire process; purchasing, logistics, research, patient services, etc. In the purchasing aspect, I have a contract with 2 drug wholesalers and abbout 30 other supply vendors. I shop for the best price at the soonest availability. In the logistics aspect, I have a contract with UPS and FEDEX. When we have patients that are further away, we will ship their medication. I will fill out the proper shipping documentation, coordinate a pick-up and call the patient and the nurse to confirm when the delivery will get there. I will also track these shipments online and follow up with patients when it arrives. For the local deliveries i coordinate the order in which the meds are delivered depending on location and patient availability. Some patients have doctors appointmments or other obligations and i have to work around them. In regards to back ordered items I will call my sales rep first to see if he has a reserve. If I provide the patients name and a doctor's script, they will release the drug to me. If I need the drug for stock then i will ask for a monthly allocation when the item is made available. If I can't get the drug at all, I will ask the pharmacist to call the doctor and suggest an alternate drug that we carry. Contact with vendors to get better pricing--I will call my sales reps every month to see if there are any discounts or sales available or coming up soon. I will also see if they are providing any competing products that i buy from other vendors. They might also suggest products that we currently dont use that might help us run the pharmacy more effectively. I also update our database with the current cost and the AWP(Average Wholesale Price) of each drug. The AWP is the price the insurance company compensates us for the drug. The accuracy of these numbers allows for accurate billing for services and whether or not we should take the business or not. In product recalls, I fill out the proper documentation and ship back the drug to the manufacturer. I make sure that we recieve a credit for drug or that it is replaced. In programming and troubleshooting, we have infusion and enteral pumps that the patients use in their homes. I am responsible for programming these pumps before they leave the office and if a patient has a problem with the pump, they will call me and i will talk them through the pump operation over the phone. On Call--When the office is closed i take on call which means if there is any problem during off hours I have to deal with it. It can be a patient, nurse, or doctor calling for various reseons. It can be a pump malfunction, high alert lab results, change in order, missing medication, or a new case referral from the hospital. Setting up CPAPs, oxygen concentrators, nebulizers-- Other then the pharmacy we also have some DME(Durable Medical Equipment) business. This means i have to set up and troubleshoot these items as well. Conducting Pharmacy Research--we include drug information packets for the patient. Drug info is constantly being updated, so i have to research, download and print new drug literature as it becomes available. When we get a new drug that a sales rep is promoting or a doctor wants to prescribe, I will research the drug info and present it to the pharmacist. Producing a cost benefit analysis of commonly used drugs---I will produce statistical data to show my supervisor the buying benefit of each drug. Some drugs are available in frozen form for a cheaper price from a new vendor instead of buying the powder vial from our wholesaler and I have to show my supervisor the benefit of adding on a new vendor account. I will also show the benefit of buying short dated drugs(almost expired) at a reduced cost because the drug is commonly used and it will be used before it expires. Also showing the benefit of making large orders of commonly used drugs/supplies from vendors that offer free shipping on large orders.
