Daily Duties at University Of Maryland School Of Medicine, Center For Vascular And Inflammatory Diseases:
Research on the functional role of immune semaphorins in allergic asthma. Design daily research plan, prepared and mixed ovalbumin and alum used to treat mice, administered intraperitoneal injections to 15 laboratory mice weekly, administered antigens intranasally and intravenously to 15 laboratory mice 3 times a week, examined and monitored experimental mice for wellness and tolerance of treatment regimens, creating mating pairs of mice for breeding, genotyped new litters of mice, performed delicate surgery on mice at the end of treatments. Exposed mice (6 mice weekly) to methacholine and used BUXCO whole body plethysmograph and SCIREX Flexivent instruments to measure airway resistance. Daily analysed experimental samples using several of standard biochemistry and molecular biology and histochemical techniques such as protein extraction and purification, DNA and RNA extraction, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Bradford assay, gel electrophoresis, immunoprecipitation, western blot, northern blot, southern blot, in situ hybridization, standard ELISA, cytometric bead array (CBA), flow cytometry (FACS). Isolated and purified primary cells from bone marrow, lungs, spleen and trachea of mice and cultured the isolated cells using standard mammalian adherent cell culture techniques. Irradiated mice to deplete their immune cells and transferred isolated and reconstituted their immune system by administering purified bone marrow cells intranasally. Ordering, procurement of laboratory consumables Management of laboratory budget Training and supervision of undergraduate and summer students during laboratory rotation. Supervised 8 laboratory support staff and technicians and graduate students. Summarised and briefed the lead investigator about the laboratory research daily. Analyzed and discussed research data with the lead investigator daily. Prepared and presented progress of research in weekly laboratory meetings comprising 15 members Prepared and presented biweekly seminars on asthma in departmental meetings comprising up to 75 members. Prepared posters to present in national aand international conferences. Technical writing for research grants. Technical writing of reviews and research manuscript Review manuscripts of peers. NRSA Grant Writing Workshop. Actively participated in the half-day workshop for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows sponsored by the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Office for Research Career Development and the Graduate Program in Life Sciences (GPILS).
