Daily Duties at Maxim Staffing Agency:

Temporary RN assignment at Kaiser Permanente. MY time at Kaiser was divided by working in the Nurse’s Clinic and The Cold and Flu line at the Call Center. The Nurses Clinic duties consisted of counting narcotics. I managed scheduling and prioritizing walk-in patients for physician ordered blood pressure checks and immediate consultations for abnormalities, provided injections of epo, antibiotics, narcotic pain medications, and taught new diabetics to use glucometers and to understand insulin administration. Under physician orders I started IVs and monitored IV therapy. Wound care consisted of measuring wounds, wound packing with various regimes, documenting processes, calling the physician for new orders or giving progress reports. I also accepted positive strep throat cultures from North Hollywood lab, notified the patient of the results and the need for treatment, and called antibiotics into pharmacy. I order supplies for the Nurse’s Clinic. Patients were scheduled for ear lavages followed by physician consultation for any abnormalities. Many patients were scheduled for vaccines which often meant organizing vaccine records for children, adults and travel vaccines for all ages. I took an active part in the unique access to the flu vaccine for patients. The uniqueness of this clinic is the solitary work environment that allowed the autonomy to perform professional nursing skills with minimal supervision. The Cold and Flu triage duties included becoming familiar with the call center equipment and managing a queue. I responded to calls from Kaiser patients requesting medical advice for viral related illness. I adhered to the protocol provided to screen for manageable care at home to those needing an appointment for evaluation of symptoms, and providing a warm hand-off for those needing emergent care to emergency department triage nurse. The clients managed were adult and pediatric Kaiser patients. The information was recorded on paper and sent for filing in the patients chart to the main chart room. Attention to detail, active listening, and correct application to protocol per patient complaint was required and done successfully. I worked with 3-4 mid-level clinicians per shift.
