Daily Duties at Lockheed Martin:
Titles while at Lockheed- Hubble Space Telescope, Science Instrument Test System (SITS): • Regression Testing of SITS software, Test Development and Quality Control Interface • System Maintenance & Enhancements • Wide-Field Camera 3 Database Manager • Property Management and Tracking • Customer Interactions -------- Daily Tasks 1998-1999: I would ensure that the Control Center System (CCS) Ground System was in working order at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) different test facilities with another team member. I would install updates to the different test facilities of CCS at GSFC and work with individual users on issue that they came across to get the resolved either in their test procedures or a fix in CCS. 1999-2001: I joined the Science Instrument Test System (SITS) in Gaithersburg,MD. I would review priorities for Program Trouble Reports (PTRs - problems reported by ourselves or our users that need to be fixed to features to add to the test system). I would work with our clients and support engineers in the field in determining reasons for issues and a current work around until we can get the issue fixed or the feature added. I would write and execute the Release Regression tests to ensure that the system was stable upon release and did everything that it was meant to do without any issues. This also required interfacing with Quality Assurance and ensuring we were following our processes for quality work. As part of the test system, I was required to troubleshoot issues, come up with solutions, implement those solutions and then unit and function test those fixes to ensure that the fix was implemented correctly. EAch month i was also responsible for ensuring i knew where each government furnished and company furnished equipment was and made inquiries where necessary to update our property location database. I was also responsible for updating and rewriting the SITS Users Manual. I came up with a timeline that would allow each team member to complete their assignment along with the other work that they had to complete. I would check with each team member as to what they needed and how they were coming with their section of the users manual that was assigned to them. This allowed for a complete re-write and a comprehensive update to the test system documentation that could be used by the end user as well as a place for training new users. 2001 - 2003: I moved out to Boulder, CO, to our clients facilities, Ball Aerospace, as one of the SITS on site support engineers. I was there to help with the Test system, provide support and report issues where needed. Since we considered our Test Systems like a maytag machine, we had to pick up other work to occupy our time. So i initially helped with Flight Software (FSW) Testing and operations procedures development that goes along with the science instruments when delivered for launch and went into operations through the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. FSW Testing required me to develop the test template used by the program, the test algorithms and ensure that i was meeting all written requirements as well as other functional requirements not listed for that piece of hardware and/or software. I would then test the different portions and provide feedback to the project where needed when an issue arose or a test failed to meet the specific requirements to get it fixed. I then became the WideField Camera 3 Database Manager. I was required to develop the telemetry and command tables and definitions. In this case our telemetry downlink was a fixed bit length and i had to assign the specific bits for the specific telemetry required. I also defined the commands for use in the ground systems such that the science instrument would understand what to do once it was received by Hubble and routed to the science instrument. I also worked with STScI on the development of commands, requirements - functional and operational, and telemetry to ensure all was smooth upon delivery. I ensured that the Test system was moved appropriately from place to place and that the resources needed were available at each phase of development of the science instruments with use of the SITS.
What they like about Lockheed Martin:
You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
