Daily Duties at Composite Materials & Engineering Center, Washington State Univ.:

worked on all kinds of polymer composites, the daily experiments include polymer composites processing (extrusion, injection molding, compression molding, coating, mixing), doing some characterization test such as Instron (mechanial peroperty), DSC/TGA (thermal property), POM/SEM/TEM/AFM(morphological property), XRD(crystalline Structure), rheometer (rheological property), DMA (dynamic mechanical property), GPC(molecular weight), nano-indentation (surface property). 1. Poly(lactic acid)(PLA) Toughening • Modifying the flexibility and toughness of PLA materials by blending PLA with flexible polymers, such as PBAT. • Studying super toughening of PLA materials by reactive extrusion of PLA with epoxy-containing elastomer under the catalysis of zinc ionomer. 2. Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) & PLA blends with soy protein • Proposing and demonstrating novel approaches of processing soy protein as plastic. • Developing cost-effective and high-performance soy protein-based bioplastics. • Simultaneous plasticating and mixing soy protein with PBAT in one-step compounding. • Exploring composition-structure-property relationship of the blends. • Exploiting different compatibilizers and plasticizers for obtaining property-oriented products. • Investigating ternary polymer blends using the theory of multi-phase polymer composites. 3. PLA/sugar beet pulp (SBP) composites • Developing low-cost and high-strength PLA/SBP bioplastics. • Studying reinforcing mechanisms by improving interfacial adhesion and mechanical interlocking for high performance. 4. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV)/ Bamboo Fiber Composites • Strengthening and toughening the polymer PHBV by incorporating short natural fibers.

What they like about Composite Materials & Engineering Center, Washington State Univ.:

The social vibrance of a hiring firm is very important to you. Your ability to make and maintain friendships there is a critical part of your decision. You would likely be dissatisfied with a workplace that is quiet, cold, or otherwise not particularly social. When you investigate a new hiring company, ask recruiters, managers, and potential co-workers about the social life and opportunities there. This is especially important when you are relocating; moving dramatically alters your social sphere both inside and outside the workplace.
