Daily Duties at General Physics:

I was responsible for retiring the client's servers in this case, the client was Pfizer Pharmacudicals. Retirement covers 2 main areas. I was responsible for following the Pfizer process to retire or decommission any servers that I was assigned to retire or decommission. I was responsible for getting neccessary Pfizer management approval to begin the retirement process. I was the responsible for making sure the the data backups were taken and the LAN disconnect was performed to coincide with notifying the direct users of the server in question. Then after the required wait period, I was responsible for notifying the Build Engineers (located offsite) to procedd with the data erasure for the server in quetsion. Following that, I was responsible for notifying the networking team to reclaim the server's IP address to re-add that address back into Pfizer's pool of available IP addresses. After that, I was responsible for notifying Site Services to physicall unplug the server from power on the physical server rack. After that, I was responsible for notifying the Facilities team to come and in the case of a retirement to physically destroy the server in question, and in the case of a decommission, to verify that the server in question has been properly labelled as decommissioned. After that, I was responsible for verifying proper destruction of the server, and then closing out the ticket in Service Center. Average time to completion for a typical server retirement is 3-4 business weeks.

What they like about General Physics:

Working in an organization that is technologically advanced, creative, and innovative is critical in your assessment of hiring companies. Less important to you are stability of the organization, the length of time an organization has been in business, and the business' plans for the future. You prefer a fast-moving company that will take risks to achieve its goals and objectives. The length of time the company has been in business is irrelevant. Maintaining status quo is unnecessary. You thrive on change, uncertainty and the upside of potential business risks, especially those associated with innovation. Stability for the long haul is not nearly as important as is working in an atmosphere that is charged with a sense of urgency and constant change.
