Daily Duties at Brennan Mathena Funeral Home:

"Brennan's of Topeka" was purchased from the Brennan family in December 1980 by Olliff-Boeve, Inc., Phillipsburg, Kansas. I was hired to manage the firm for the absentee owner from that time until I purchased the firm in August 1995. The duties remained essentially the same. I managed a staff of three other full-time employees and seven part-time personnel. I made first call removals from home, hospital, nursing home and other locations where death will occur. I transported remains to funeral home for preparation. I contacted the responsible family member to make an appointment at their residence or funeral home to begin the arrangement process. I contacted clergy for the family when appropriate. I met with at-need families and secured the necessary information for a newspaper obituary and to complete the necessary legal documents which include the death certificate, application for certified death certificate, Burial Transit permit, Coroner's Release for Cremation, when appropriate, Social Security, Veterans' Administration and Insurance documents, completion of the necessary FTC documents for signature by family or authorized person. When necessary, we attended to the necessary documents related to SRS, Victims Compensation Program, and worked with the Mexican Consulate in Kansas City to obtain financial assistance for those qualified and/or arranged for remains to be shipped out-of-country. I also had responsibility for OSHA compliance and kept the necessary documentation for inspectors Completed the front of Register Book for in-state and listed each floral arrangment by description and donor. Arranged floral arrangements in chapel or stateroom and attended in-state and rosaries with my part-time help. Arranged for proper distribution of the flowers after the funeral. Made necessary arrangements at the Church for flowers, books, folders, cards. Eighty-eight percent of our funerals were in a Catholic Church. Met with casket company representatives on regular basis. I maintained my own selection room floor. Maintaned inventory in warehouse and floor and re-ordered when necessary. Met regularly with vault company officials and strategized presentations. I was in charge of all advertising which was done in appropriate ways. Church calendars, newspapers, local media. I paid special attention to the appearance of the facility, inside and out. Negotiated a new roof and other mechanical necessities; I negotiated for and maintained a rolling stock of two limousines, one coach and two delivery vehicles. I made arrangements for additional automotive equipment as the need arose. I conducted funerals from start to finish. I oversaw our pre-arrangment program in-house and thru representatives of Forethought. I made the necessary arrangments with banks for pre-need trust accounts
