Daily Duties at San Juan School District:

Manage a population of 100 students preschool through 5th grade and 16 employees in a rural community serving the Navajo Nation where poverty and unemployment are the rule rather than the exception. Work intimately with the American Indian community to integrate cultural enrichment in support of learning and the educational process. Lead the school-wide effort to improve academics in the Reservation community of 80% free or reduced lunch participation and 40% English Language Learners. The scope of this position includes staff recruitment, development, and evaluation; fiscal management; student discipline; team building and shared decision making; school community council coordination; school values promotion; maintenance and grounds supervision; school and cultural connections; and creation of a safe, fair, and respectful environment; and event coordination. • Awarded state-wide recognition for reducing the gap in educational achievement of English Language Learner students and others. • Increased student reading achievement levels by 30%, math achievement levels by 15%, and science achievement levels by 15%. • Increased student enrollment by 33% by restoring community trust through active parent outreach and cultural community involvement programs. • Secured funding to provide arts, physical education, gifted, and after school programs and funding for instructional interactive whiteboards in each classroom. • Created a Gifted and Talented program. • Promoted Bluff Elementary as a model school for principals and teachers on a state wide basis for the last three years to observe the practice of effective Scientifically Based Reading Research (SBRR). • Fostered a team centric atmosphere by implementing a Professional Learning Community (PLC) model. • Maintained high levels of instructional quality by modeling and coaching teachers in appropriate use of curriculum, instructional methods, assessments, and classroom management techniques. • ¬Utilized data to effectively prescribe instructional interventions for students. • ¬Gathered observational data measuring levels of engagement. Increased academic achievement by providing instructional intervention to teaching staff when engagement was low. • Taught 3rd-5th grade math as well as provided numerous reading interventions for individuals or groups as needed. • Employed scientifically based positive behavior support systems for students resulting in decreased office referrals. • Extensive experience with Individual Education and Individual Disabilities (504) plans. • Supported parents and other community members interested in higher education or career development by guiding them through research inquiry of programs and application consultation.
