Daily Duties at Moventas, Inc.:
My responsibilities have evolved considerably during my nearly 4 years with Moventas. I was originally hired by Moventas' CEO for the Wind Gear Capital Division to build a business case for a Moventas wind turbine gearbox assembly plant in the Midwest United States, help get the project approved by the Moventas BOD, recruit the team for the midwest assembly plant, and manage the operation. At the time it was being discussed that the location would also serve as Moventas' North American headquarters. The project was approved by the BOD in 2Q-2008, was announced in 3Q-2008, then put on-hold in 4Q-2008 due to the deteriorating economy. At the time, it was uncertain how long the project would be delayed. In 1Q-2009 I was asked to lead Moventas' troubled U.S. Wind Gear Service business which was very much in need of leadership. From March 2009 through July 2010 I served as Vice President responsible for the Wind Gear Service business based in Portland, OR and with a satellite workshop Big Spring, TX. I travelled extensively to Portland and Big Spring while serving as VP Wind Gear Service, and also continued to work on-behalf of Wind Gear Capital in evaluating alternate scenarios for the planned midwest gearbox assembly plant. The alternate scenarios included, for example, reduced or changed scope, existing buildings available for lease vs. building new (new was the original plan), or establish assembly operations in Moventas' existing Portland facilities. In 3Q-2010 the decision was made to establish small-scale capital assembly operations in Portland. Moventas leadership asked if I would relocate to Portland as we all agreed my "commuting" to Portland was not sustainable. I declined to move my family to Portland so we quickly recruited my replacement in Portland. When the new Portland-based General Manager came on board in 3Q-2010, I accepted a newly created role with Moventas as Vice President North America Service Division, now overseeing all Moventas North American Service Operations, which includes an Industrial Gear Service business based out of Greenville, SC, and a combined Wind Gear / Industrial Gear Service business based in Cambridge, Ontario. Today I keep an office in Chanhassen, MN and manage Moventas North American Service Business with workshops in Portland, OR, Big Spring, TX, Greenville, SC, and Cambridge, ONT, Canada.
What they like about Moventas, Inc.:
Working for a company with an emphasis on social values and helping society is a clear and important priority for you - a critical factor in who you choose to work for. In contrast to other factors, you place an organization's reputation for fairness and concern for the community above most other aspects of the company. As you search for a new job opportunity, it is usually possible to find out if the company is involved in the community and/or if it is addressing problems and issues in society. Pay special attention to non-profit organizations and those specifically involved in social action. Moreover, speaking with current and former employees should enlighten you to perceptions of the fairness of the company's leaders and the treatment of employees.
