Daily Duties at Exelon Nuclear:
-Nuclear Materials Custodian (NMC): Responsible for the inventory and control of all site nuclear materials and the monthly and annual reports required by the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission). I controlled the stringent shipping and receiving guidelines for nuclear material being received and being transferred to other nuclear sites. -Nuclear Fuel Inspector (NFI): Responsible for the quality control of the nuclear fuel being burned at the Byron Nuclear Plant. From the inception of design at Westinghouse to the manufacturing oversite and then final receipt inspection at the Byron facility. This ensures that there are no product defects that would lead to radioactive material leaking out of the fuel rods. I directly trained and supervised union employees in the task of inspecting the fuel when it arrived at the plant. Additionally, foreign material control is a top priority at a nuclear plant and especially around the new fuel prior to its insertion in the core, therefore plant cleanliness was considered a must and was part of an indicator program tied to company bonuses. -Fuel Reliability Engineer (FRE): As an FRE I was charged with monitoring the chemistry samples of the reactor core and determining if there exists a fuel rod leaking radiation into the primary water loop. -Lead Test Assembly Project Manager (LTA PM): With the responsibilities listed above while working at Exelon, my qualifications lead me to be the LTA PM. An LTA is a fuel assembly that is different from the others, to be considered a new model, untried, untested. After the fuel assembly has burned in the reactor core for one cycle, it must be tested to ensure it is performing as designed. Under major accomplishments I listed the LTA PM and some accomplishments. These projects ran 24 hours a day, therefore perfect planning was required by the PM to ensure a smooth, uneventful back shift.
What they like about Exelon Nuclear:
Working in an organization that is technologically advanced, creative, and innovative is critical in your assessment of hiring companies. Less important to you are stability of the organization, the length of time an organization has been in business, and the business' plans for the future. You prefer a fast-moving company that will take risks to achieve its goals and objectives. The length of time the company has been in business is irrelevant. Maintaining status quo is unnecessary. You thrive on change, uncertainty and the upside of potential business risks, especially those associated with innovation. Stability for the long haul is not nearly as important as is working in an atmosphere that is charged with a sense of urgency and constant change.
