Daily Duties at East Texas Medical Center:

Working in the Obstetrics Department we are rotated and pulled from one unit to the next so knowing all 3 units is a vital. The Labor and Delivery side, Nursery, and Postpartum. I work the 7a- 7p shift we do not have the convenience of the support personnel at night. I have been in situations where a stat c-sections was called and you have a limited amount of time to react and get the surgical on call team called in. Knowing your way around the OR is a must and as a Surgical Tech. I feel more comfortable in this area. Being able to remain calm under stressful emergent situations and convey that to the new mom is very important as I have been the only one in the room when the newborn was born before the Doctor arrived. Patient education is another important aspect of nursing and being in a community that a good deal of our patients are hispanic that speak little if any English. This can be a challenge although we have acsess to a phone line that will translate for you. There still needs to be a sense of compassion and trust between the patient and myself.

What they like about East Texas Medical Center:

Working for a company with an emphasis on social values and helping society is a clear and important priority for you - a critical factor in who you choose to work for. In contrast to other factors, you place an organization's reputation for fairness and concern for the community above most other aspects of the company. As you search for a new job opportunity, it is usually possible to find out if the company is involved in the community and/or if it is addressing problems and issues in society. Pay special attention to non-profit organizations and those specifically involved in social action. Moreover, speaking with current and former employees should enlighten you to perceptions of the fairness of the company's leaders and the treatment of employees.
