Daily Duties at Office Of The Oklahoma Attorney General:

Over the past ten years I have served in two units at the Oklahoma Attorney General's office. The first was in the Workers Compensation Fraud Unit. In that Unit my duties consisted of reviewing investigations of workers comp. fraud cases; filed and prosecuted workers comp. fraud. Due to a shortage of staff in the Litigation Section I was asked to serve as a staff attorney in the Litigation Section. My duties consisted of defending the State and its employees in a variety of civil cases. The majority of the cases were in Title VII and Burk tort employment cases, civil rights claims and Governmental Tort Claim cases. My duties consisted of meeting with the client, determining the defense strategy, all phases of discovery including taking and defending depositions; locating and contracting with the experts; motion practice, determining liability and settlement value of the case; negotiating settlements and attending mediations and settlement conferences; working with Risk Management regarding liability and settlements; preparing the case for trial; and, trials in State and Federal Court. In 2005 - April 2011 I served as the Chief of Litigation Division. As chief of the divisions my duties consited of a wide variety of activites and projects. They included the supervision of all litigation attorneys (17 attorneys) and support staff(5 support staff); supervision of the defense of all litigation cases being defended by the Office of the Attorney General; Aid and consult with the 1st Attistant Attorney General and Attorney General on all state civil matters; serve as the Attorney General's legal representative in dealing with State Agency Directors, General Counsel for State Agencies, State Judiciary, State District Attorneys and other State employees; managed, directed and controled the civil litigation activities, including preparation and assistance in mediations and settlement conference in State and Federal cases; reviewed all new cases filed against the State and/or employees; and, assign cases to subordinate attorneys or refer cases to appropriate Agency for defense. Other duties included the investigation of civil cases, including scope of employment issues and made recommendation to the Attorney General regarding representation. Review and approve all appeals for civil litigation; review, assign and recommend joining in Amicus briefs for the State of Oklahoma; approve or deny all outside attorney contracts; assist in the preparation of the yearly report regarding outside counsel for the State; prepare all outside attorney contracts for the Attorney General; respond to public correspondence; organize and participate in moot court panels; interview and recommend for hire all personnel for the litigation section; prepare all evaluations for the litigation staff and recommend disciplinary action including terminations; assist the finance division on budgets for the litigation section; and, approved payment of litigation expenses. I am currenlty serving as Senior Assistant Attorney General to the Employment Law Section within the Litigation Section. My duties are to defending the State, its Agencies and employees in all employment matters including Title VII, Section 1981, 1983, Burk Tort and ADA compliance issues. In this position I am responsible for the defense and supervision of the defense of all employment and ADA compliance matters, which includes preparing the cases for trial, determining liability, assesing settlement value and negotiating settlements and trials in State and Federal Court. Other duties include assisting and supervising the defense of other employment cases handled by other attorneys being defended by the Office of the Attorney General. Assisting Risk Management in the settlement of cases and attending mediations and settlement conferences in State and Federal Court.
