Daily Duties at Congoleum Corporation:

Managed quality control functions in analytical lab that supported research and development; tested end products for various physical properties to ensure finished products’ maximum performance. Utilized variety of analytical techniques such as infrared scans to identify contaminants, differential colorimetry analysis to identify physical properties, and scanning electron microscope to view topography of surface. Collected data from gas and liquid chromatography testing; reduced and analyzed information. Examined competition’s products using wet chemistry techniques to identify materials used in urethane coatings and floor coverings. Prepared data-based presentations and written reports for delivery at research meetings; provided information about number of data points used, testing methods, and statistical analysis. Collaborated closely with chemists in R&D to provide feedback on findings. Developed and implemented test methods for routine analyses. Trained personnel in use and maintenance of laboratory equipment such as Karl Fischer, IR, TGA, DSC, and SEM; taught lab technicians to determine moisture content using Karl Fischer, change reagents as needed, and calibrate machines. Assisted organic chemists with synthesis of oligomers and formulation into urethane coatings; cured and tested coatings. Served as chemical hygiene officer for R&D, ensuring lab personnel conformed to state and federal safety regulations and maintaining safety equipment such as fume hoods. Headed safety team to implement chemical waste disposal programs, storing discarded chemicals appropriately and communicating with disposal personnel. Designed testing systems that mimicked high traffic areas in order to accelerate testing in manner similar to real-world situations. Lab Technician 1990-1996 Operated and maintained GC, DSC, TGA, and SEM in support of research and development. Tested raw materials and finished products; developed tests according to ASTM standard methods. Earned award for successful implementation of quality process to increase analytical output resulting in facilitation of product manufacture; used methanol to precipitate resins from dissolved products thus improving separation of components of interest with various analytical techniques.
