Daily Duties at Procter And Gamble Co.:
Formulation member of a product development team. Determined ingredients for product based upon Marketing department's forecasts of profit, internal or external use, recommendations of toxicology, manner of delivery, and result of product panels, and cost. I was responsible for patent searches to determine whether I was encroaching or could use other technology. Several prototypes went to metallurgists to determine constitution of tank, lines, connectors, and gaskets another source of expense since we always hoped products would go to National Marketing instead of the archives. Next segment of my job was scale-up of best 2 or 3 formulas & optimize the process. During this time microbiology, focus groups, and Phase III trials (if ready). A marketing selection committee chose the final formula. I developed the analytical methods the plant would require to pass a batch of product and trained personnel. Finally ready for national scale up, I always took the night shift. Several hundred units were prepared for the FDA's Expiration dating protocol - which varied with product. In the case of a drug product, I supervised patient contact portion of the Phase III trials. As a team player, my formulation required members to handle Analytical, Microbiology, Marketing, Packaging, Process Engineering, Chemical and Electrical Engineers and Consumer Test personnel.
