Formed new department from scratch to create and execute the division’s Internet strategy; including technology and marketing. • Built Internet division from ground up. • General Management position: technology , infrastructure, marketing, business development. • Budget and P&L responsibility. • Created award-winning genealogy sites (FamilyTreeMaker.com, Genealogy.com): - Negotiated content deals and developed leading content - Created index of 30,000 categorized links (Yahoo-like directory) of genealogy sites - Created search engine and database of ¼ billion names of ancestors, including proprietary web crawler searching millions of web pages (like Google, but for names and dates) - Created user genealogy home page creation and hosting environment - Negotiated syndication deals with AOL, Yahoo, and Excite to syndicate our content on their portals. - Grew traffic from zero to 70th most visited site on the Internet (1998). - Created tight link between web-based features and retail Windows application, including search, data submission, home page creation and upload, product update and notices, all integrated with the companion retail application. - Created online subscription-fee-based area, generated 150,000 subscribers within 4 months of launch - Created newsletter and e-marketing campaigns to 500,000 person email list - Created online store for sale of products, downloads Broderbund acquired previous company, so total time was not 2 years by 7 combined.
