Daily Duties at S.U.N.Y. Maritime College:

Taught several semesters of Marine Basic Safety Lab while the “NRC Guardian” was berthed at SUNY Maritime College. The course was designed to give students a “hands-on” approach to subjects surrounding their S.T.C.W. certification (Standards of Training, Certification, & Watch-standing) including, but not limited to, shipboard firefighting, emergency systems, water survival, first aid, CPR, and basic seamanship. Was successful in providing the students a “unique” training environment by combining the use of the OSRV “NRC Guardian” with the course curriculum in order to give students a more industry specific approach to marine basic safety. During my term, also served as an assistant instructor at the MSC shipboard firefighting academy in Freehold, NJ. In addition to teaching, was also active in running the campus ship/bridge simulator for classes involving vessel bridge operations and watch-standing for advanced cadets.

What they like about S.U.N.Y. Maritime College:

Working in an organization that is technologically advanced, creative, and innovative is critical in your assessment of hiring companies. Less important to you are stability of the organization, the length of time an organization has been in business, and the business' plans for the future. You prefer a fast-moving company that will take risks to achieve its goals and objectives. The length of time the company has been in business is irrelevant. Maintaining status quo is unnecessary. You thrive on change, uncertainty and the upside of potential business risks, especially those associated with innovation. Stability for the long haul is not nearly as important as is working in an atmosphere that is charged with a sense of urgency and constant change.
