Daily Duties at Alexander Cohen Hospice House:

) CLINICAL SKILLS: Working at an inpatient hospice house (Alexander Cohen Hospice House) for 3 years, has really improved my clinical skills. It’s like night and day compared to outpatient hospice. Upon admission, a lot of my patients symptoms (pain, infection, fever, open wounds, dehydration, confusion, etc.) would be so out of control (screaming/crying/writhing in pain, shaking from fever/chills, odor from wounds, etc.) that it felt like I was working in an E.R. That experience taught and/or improved my skills in these area’s: prioritizing/time management/multitasking in relation to symptom management (knocking out pain, fever reduction/cooling measures, I.V./feeding tube/oral re-hydration, etc.). Doing all of that with the proper amount of equipment and medication, in one visit to their room. Other skills/equipment I’m familiar and proficient with: I.V.’s, PICC lines, chest ports, NG/G-tubes/J-tubes, wound drainage tubes, catheters, simple and complex wound care, ventilators/trach’s/suction devices, CPM’s/external fixators/halo’s, o2 delivery systems, telemetry/cardiac/EKG equipment, AND, I have given medication through every route possible (I.V., I.M., Sub-Q, Through all feeding tubes, oral, sublingual, topical, ophthalmic, ear drops, inhalation, and rectal. I also have great assessment/intervention/reassessment skills. SUPERVISOR: All of the above AND, handling all patient/family/staff issues/post mortem care, notifying appropriate parties related to change of condition or death (M.D.'s,other disciplinaries of hospice, mortuary, family, friends, etc.). Admissions and discharges, staffing and assignments.
