Daily Duties at University Of Miami:
As a staff member, this role involved frequent interaction with professors and students within the University and nearby NOAA Hurricane Research Division. During hurricane season, joint sessions were held to provide hurricane briefings for the campus community. During these sessions I met many who have since moved on to the national hurricane Center, with whom I still maintain contact today. The main portions of my position during this time: Respond to requests from university management for event-forecasts, as well as to requests from local media (and on one occasion, national media) for weather information. Assist several professors in tasks related to their research, including computer-based work as well as field work. Also assisted senior level graduate students with computer-based tools and research questions. The teaching part of this role was primarily to assist professors in laboratory sessions, setting up local field trips for students, and mentoring students as participants in the National Collegiate Weather Forecasting Contest.
What they like about University Of Miami:
The social vibrance of a hiring firm is very important to you. Your ability to make and maintain friendships there is a critical part of your decision. You would likely be dissatisfied with a workplace that is quiet, cold, or otherwise not particularly social. When you investigate a new hiring company, ask recruiters, managers, and potential co-workers about the social life and opportunities there. This is especially important when you are relocating; moving dramatically alters your social sphere both inside and outside the workplace.
