Daily Duties at Smith International:

I worked as a machinist in the manufacturing of down-hole tools, primarily drill bits, for the oil industry. I was hired directly into Cell 5, and advanced to the less supervised weekend shift in just over a month of my initial hire date. I performed all of the duties that would typically go with such a position, including reading blueprints, inspection of the 5 axis machine and the tooling for proper operation, preventative maintenance, use of very fine measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers, and general reporting duties on the bits that were produced. A few months later, the company felt it needed to downsize due to the overall poor state of the economy. Being that the staffing policies are seniority based instead of merit based, I was one of the first to be laid off.
