Daily Duties at American Fundware / Intuit Public Sector Solutions:
American Fundware (later acquired by Intuit) developed Fundware, a fund accounting package used by not-for-profit organizations, governmental agencies, universities, etc. Fundware was a text/DOS-based, Micro Focus COBOL application with a non-relational (ISAM) data store being ported to use VB GUI UIs, add functionality, and move towards an n-tier solution. Led and mentored teams of two to five developers on projects of several months’ duration. Gathered requirements, analyzed, designed, sized, planned, implemented, and supported the solutions. Evaluated new/alternate software technologies (e.g. MTS, DCOM, and ADO) and presented findings. Reduced development costs associated with ActiveX access to ISAM “tables” and updating the data in them. Co-developed a system-level VB/COBOL pseudo ODBC driver that used a proprietary data dictionary, parsed simple TSQL queries, returned ADO record sets, and performed transactional batch updates. Authored system-level executables encapsulating access to configuration information in a local or remote registry or other locations. Mitigated build/install/SCM issues arising from the use of .NET by VB--authored a COM to .NET factory/proxy in C#, used by VB code via COM Interop. Enhanced troubleshooting through an exception handling/reporting mechanism in VB and an IDE add-in for its use. Enabled reliable and rapid database changes with a co-authored SQL Server 2000 database conversion utility (run by installation programs) using SQL-DMO, and the SCM procedures required to make it work. Eliminated the release of defective builds to QA and minimized development effort required to modify or troubleshoot the build. Replaced a crude and unreliable DOS batch build utility with a flexible and robust SCM/build utility that used VB, SQL Server 2000, Visual Source Safe, SQL-DMO, the various compilers (.NET, C++, COBOL, VB) that created the roughly 1000 binary files of the application, and validated database changes using the database conversion utility mentioned above. The entire code base might be rebuilt several times a day using the utility. The utility e-mailed the results of the build to development; if there was a failure, the issue could be fixed and the build could be resumed without starting over. Otherwise the build could be released to QA.
What they like about American Fundware / Intuit Public Sector Solutions:
Working in an organization that is technologically advanced, creative, and innovative is critical in your assessment of hiring companies. Less important to you are stability of the organization, the length of time an organization has been in business, and the business' plans for the future. You prefer a fast-moving company that will take risks to achieve its goals and objectives. The length of time the company has been in business is irrelevant. Maintaining status quo is unnecessary. You thrive on change, uncertainty and the upside of potential business risks, especially those associated with innovation. Stability for the long haul is not nearly as important as is working in an atmosphere that is charged with a sense of urgency and constant change.
