Daily Duties at Cebu Doctors' Hospital:

• Admit and accompany patients to the designated room and bed; explain the hospital’s policies and protocols briefly and give instructions about the ward’s facilities • Prepare admission documentation e.g. present and previous medical history, allergies, present medications, activities of daily living, family and social history and other relevant information • Include discharge planning and the expected discharge destination on admission • Check patient’s file including consent to surgery or procedure, physical assessment, pre-clerking documents, results of laboratory results • Prepare pre-operative patient’s checklist and care plan stating patient’s outcome and evaluation criteria • Give pre-operative teachings and instructions; provide information leaflets and allow expression of fear and anxiety through verbalization • Receive and accompany post-operative sites, observe signs and symptoms, institute remedial action when appropriate and record in chart • Use infusion control devices e.g. IVAC, Syringe Pump, Heplock, Blood warmer • Use pain control devices e.g. Epidural infusion and PCA (Patient Controlled Analgesia) appropriately • Observe patient’s response to pain, administer to analgesic as required and monitor effects • Administer blood and blood products; monitor patient’s condition while on transfusion and institute remedial action for any reaction • Administer total parenteral nutrition and other fluids via CV line • Perform IV cannulation and administer IV fluids • Perform wound irrigation, bladder washout and give enemas • Administer oxygen inhalation via nasal cannula or face mask • Prepare and administer prescribed medications according to established policies and protocols and chart patient’s reactions to any medication • Check expiration and sterility packing of drugs and medical supplies • Assist in male and female catheterization, monitor urine output and record • Monitor patient’s blood glucose level by glucometer and interpret values • Carry out doctor’s legal orders; assist doctors in examining patients or during ward rounds; collaborate with nurse practitioners and house officers and report any significant event relevant to patient care • Collaborate with other members of the multidisciplinary team as necessary to improve patient’s care • Perform complex wound care using a variety of dressings • Give patients and their families discharge health teachings, counter check, home medications against prescription and instruct patients • Supervise enrolled university nursing students, newly qualified nurses and healthcare assistants • Provide support for patients with terminal illness including their families • Perform Last Offices/Post Mortem Care and prepare documents
