Daily Duties at Chicago Police Department:

As a Sergeant assigned to the Detective Division I would supervise Detectives assigned to property crimes, I would analyze burglary patterns, crimes against the elderly, cargo thefts, identity thefts and telephone threats. I would fill in regularly as a Sergeant in homicide and robbery. I would conduct surveillances with Detectives, in which we broke up a burglary team that victimized 10 stores. I have conducted a number of surveillances during my assignment to the narcotics unit and conducted many search warrants to recover weapons and drugs. I would work undercover to purchase drugs and after the investigation was completed, charge the dealers with a positive conviction rate. A great deal of our success rate was due to cooperation with the community, as a strong believer in community involvement I would encourage my subordinates to be involved in the community. I have supervised the asset forfeiture unit; this unit is very instrumental in stripping the drug dealers from the illicit money, cars and homes they obtained with drug money. As a tactical Sergeant in the Southside of the city, I asked and received from the Commander to be the community policing Sergeant in conjunction with the tactical unit. I was assigned to the most crime ridden beat in the area; I developed a plan to raise the attendance of participants at our monthly community policing meetings. I raised the attendance from 11 to 40 people, I provided my phone number to all the attendees and encouraged them to call with tips or advise. I built a strong relationship with the community, encouraging them to attend candlelight vigils for crime reduction. I volunteered my off time to the children from the beat, we would meet at Fuller Park and play basket ball, baseball and have boxing tournaments. With my position firmly in place as a part of the community, I started to receive the necessary information from the residence to help me reduce crime and deployed my tactical team with information given to me. After one year I reduced the crime on that beat by 60% and received an award by the community for my service to them. My assignment as the Sergeant for officers assigned to the law department, corporation council was challenging and rewarding, I supervised Officers to investigate drug houses, building violations and landlord tenant disputes. I worked side by side with the city attorneys and developed a plan to raise the number of summons and subpoenas that my Officers served. Through our hard work and dedication a number of drug houses were demolished. This particular assignment also involved investigating and locating witnesses that were involved in various lawsuits against the city. While being a patrol Sergeant in the downtown area, I was involved in keeping the peace during the Chicago Bull victory celebrations and the Chicago White Sox Celebrations. I would relieve the tactical Sergeant as needed and deploy my officers to the subways and the business areas to deter crime, pick pockets, con artist, and robberies.
