Daily Duties at Army National Guard:

Information Management Officer/Shift Leader/Squad Leader I was a shift leader for the Camp Bucca, Iraq’s Base Defense Communications Shop. Our shop was in charge of installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and training on all communications equipment in conjunction with all base defense operations. This included making sure the tactical operation centers could communicate with all internal and external patrols ensuring the safety of all personnel both inside and outside the camp. We were also responsible to conducting monthly inventory of millions of dollars worth of military communications systems, equipment, and parts. I supervised both Army and Air Force personnel, dealing with a pool of manpower that was fluid due to multiple operational needs. I prioritized tasks based on higher guidance, assigned them accordingly, and instructed, supervised, and inspected to ensure operational success. As the primary Information Management Officer (IMO) I led a team who’s duty was to ensure all the computer systems related to base security on camp was fully operational. I selected secondary IMOs to assist with special projects and tasks. Some of the tasks included working on network issues running on Windows XP, mapping drives, installing hardware, Microsoft Office, and other software issues. I set up user accounts, making sure all users had the proper security clearances to access classified systems. I educated and supervised users on how to use their workstations without compromising secret information. Special Projects: • I oversaw the replacement of over 50 active computer systems on the secure network with limited personnel and a short time frame. Each system was imperative to successful completion of operations and they all operated on a 24 hour basis • Coordinated a training class for a company of over 100 soldiers deploying to another camp. The class consisted of familiarizing the soldiers on how to use and maintain important communications equipment they would be using on a daily basis. This class was conducted successfully with a limited time frame and while we were short-staffed. • Because of my expertise and dependability, I was chosen as the camp communications liaison for different missions traveling to different camps around Iraq. I coordinated meetings, and inspected equipment valued over $1,000,000 to be picked up and repaired. • Maintained a running inventory of equipment needed for repairs. Prepared order statements to ensure our shop was supplied with the parts necessary to do our jobs. • I was the company Communications Security (COMSEC) custodian. Was responsible for obtaining, maintaining, and protecting COMSEC keys for all base defense communications assets. I also trained army and air force personnel on how to load COMSEC keys to encrypt communications equipment.
