Recently I was asked to instruct a young lady in a Detention Center. She was very negative toward education and refused to look at a book! I used a JC Penny's Catalog for our first lesson. She was able to see that reading and basic Math were necessary for daily living. Slowly but surely we continued until she was able to graduate.
