What they like about Sony Online Entertainment:
The social vibrance of a hiring firm is very important to you. Your ability to make and maintain friendships there is a critical part of your decision. You would likely be dissatisfied with a workplace that is quiet, cold, or otherwise not particularly social. When you investigate a new hiring company, ask recruiters, managers, and potential co-workers about the social life and opportunities there. This is especially important when you are relocating; moving dramatically alters your social sphere both inside and outside the workplace.

Climbers' Joblogs at Sony Online Entertainment:
Irons in the Fire
Since being released from Sony Online Entertainment I've had contact with a number of business associates in the entertainment and gaming industry. Everyone has been very supportive of my skills and are confident I won't remain jobless for long. It's good to know that I've made that kind of impression on some of the toughest people to work with in the world. Attorneys, accountants, bank managers, well-known publicity agents...and even my old staff!Times are tough across the board, even in show biz, but I know the right position will come along very soon. There's always something that needs marketing and the real plus is that I can project manage virtually anything from start to finish. As long as it's a product I believe in, I can work the miracles it needs to lead the field.
It's only been about a week but I've spentmy time casually consulting on things like Intellectual Property rights, immigration visas, and a proposal for a high-profile showroom venture in Las Vegas - all of which are really fun topics for me. I love seeing the work come out looking beautiful, I love baking the numbers and exercising my brain cells to put together the perfect deal.
Looking forward to an interview soon, though! I'm anxious to be working with a team!
Week #2 - Staying busy and staying positive!
I had a fun little project to work on today involving some ticket pricing for an event scheduled for Hawaii. I was given two sets of prices to consider so that I could deliver an opinion on which should be the official scaling for the show. I happen to like the economic theory that goes into pricing things so this had my brain cells buzzing! The first set of prices was too low and the second set of prices was fundamentally flawed - it favored higher revenues from a very small section of seats while it sacrificed revenues from the biggest section of seats.
On paper, the theory of high-end profit load can look really attractive for just about any product - those who buy the high-end of anything are basically covering the R&D costs. This works in electronics; think of plasma TV prices in 1990 compared to today, or a fridge with all the bells & whistles compared to a basic model. It is less workable when dealing with service industries. If the bulk of your audience can most afford the middle and lower prices, you're not doing yourself any favors by lowering =those= prices while raising the higher one(s).
After some analysis I came up with a third set of prices that I feel is more in line with the prestige of the event and the pocketbook of the ticket buyer. The revenue load is equitably distributed across all price tiers and the profit potential is several thousand dollars higher - even if 30% of any particular tier remain unsold.
After that I got back to the business of combing through career descriptions and submitting applications for my potential next job. Like everyone in my position I've got a lot on my mind but my philosophy is I can either get worried or get busy. I choose busy with a healthy dose of optimism!
Heck, if I can't believe in myself how can I convince anyone else to believe in me?!
