Daily Duties at Houg Enterprises:
Started as dispatcher for a fleet of 16 refrigerated carrier trucks. Over the next five years it grew to eighty-five trucks and I moved up to Supervisor and then my final promotion to Operations Manager in 1999. Operations Manager: Responsible for daily operations of a transportation division during a period of tremendous growth. Directly responsible for all drivers and employees that grew to 95. Increased revenue per mile from $1.20 to $1.30, in cooperation with an aggressive sales force to meet all customer needs. Involved in quoting outbound rates, negotiating inbound rates, developing a customer base and making difficult decisions on all logistics problems. Created new methods to help the department work more effectively and efficiently internally and with the rest of the company. Operations Supervisor: Scheduled a fleet of that grew as large as seventy trucks with responsibilities that included: Meeting customer needs, maximizing mileage and revenue for each truck, while meeting budgetary goals. Created a schedule, using only excel, due to budget restraints, that consistently averaged 3000 miles per week per truck and grew revenue from $1.15 per mile to $1.20 per mile. Directly responsible for managing six dispatchers. During two department moves handled moving offices and organized that office to handle a growing work force. On call 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Dispatched, coordinated schedule, evaluated, hired and fired drivers. Authorized raises and bonuses for drivers based upon performance and budget constraints. Dispatcher: Responsible for individual driver issues in my fleet that started at 16 trucks and drivers and grew to 30 before another dispatcher was added. Dispatched drivers and developed a calling system to alert drivers to their next run.
What they like about Houg Enterprises:
You give high priority to hiring firms with prestige. Market reputation and prestige of a firm may be determined through on-line research, and conversations with individuals working in your target industry. Note that firms "in the public eye" receive a great deal more critical publicity and attention than those operating with more anonymity. So as you assess your employment opportunities, be sure to seek out the positive aspects of the firm's reputation in addition to noting negative publicity the company may have received.
