Daily Duties at Dte Energy:
Managed 3 million dollar annual hardware/software budget for electric utility serving almost 5 million customers in southeastern Michigan with 8 fossil generation plants and 1 nuclear facility. Established and maintained vendor relationships to include negotiating contract terms and pricing and auditing purchases to ensure agreement compliance. Oversaw hardware and software assets and unbilled liabilities. Collaborated with internal departments and requisition originators to resolve billing discrepancies. Key Achievements: •Led research initiative to move departmental focus from contract administration to corporate contract and asset management. •Designed, implemented an improved ordering and procurement processes that reduced order cycle times by 30%. Designed and directed development of use cases, test scenarios, and issue logs for customer billing applications for nearly 5 million customers. Worked with management team in joint application development (JAD) sessions to define specific product releases and manage project teams through development, deployment and rollout of new software features. Conducted manual load testing, manual regression testing, and manual white box testing to ensure high-quality applications development on an Oracle database platform coded using Java. Involved in estimating the efforts required in new development or re-engineering of a project by work breakdown procedure, covering all aspects from requirement capturing, security, gap analysis, quality requirements, data migration, testing/bug fixing to final go-live. Also responsible for creation of BRS (Business Requirement Specifications) for various projects. Extensive knowledge of software development methodologies such as Rapid Application Development, Agile Software Development, Dynamic Systems Development Model, Object-Oriented Technology, IBM Rational Unified Process, ITIL. Facilitated CMMI project audits to ensure company achieved CMMI Level 3. Conducted needs assessments of company's technical business subject matter experts (TBSME) and offered detailed recommendations for TBSME training programs. Led project teams in gathering business requirements and developing technical specifications for IT projects. Key Projects: •Commercial Availability Project: Conducted requirements gathering using IBM Rational Software and presented project overview to senior management. This project resulted in improved communication and data trending which resulted in 1 million dollar in annual savings. Received the Sarah Sheridan Award for outstanding project performance. •Return Mail Project: Honored with second consecutive Sarah Sheridan Award for gathering project requirements utilizing IBM Rational Software, developing test cases, and ensuring data integrity and quality remained at an optimal level from project conception to transfer to production support. This project resulted in reducing the number of bills sent to incorrect customer addresses by 50%. •Customer Service Billing: Devised and documented formal processes to ensure data integrity throughout quality assurance portion of Customer Service Billing application development (from conception to transference to production support). •Electric Choice: Modified and developed document repository format necessary for the containment of regulatory documents essential for Electric Choice Program Implementation Team Project. •UNIX Upgrade: Managed enterprise upgrade from UNIX version 10.0 to 11.0 and 11.I for more than 30 applications affecting 35 servers. This project was completed within an aggressive 2 month time frame with 0 down time. •Meter Data Management: Managed requirements gathering utilizing RUP Methodology and IBM Rational Software, use case development, and testing effort for a 1.5 million dollar system upgrade effort to automate and eliminate portions of the meter reading process to improve operational effectiveness. •Express Payment: Implemented option for customers with payment problems to reduce past-due accounts.

Business Analyst
How would you define the role of a business analyst?The British Computer Society proposes the following definition of a business analyst: "An internal consultancy role that has responsibility for investigating business systems, identifying options for improving business systems and bridging the needs of the business with the use of IT."

The above definition is close to my perspective but let's get a little personal. I define a business analyst as a bridge between the programmer and the business user. Some of the activities that should be correctly associated with a true business analyst would be requirements gathering, production of use cases, test cases, detail test cases, and graphic models utilizing UML to accurately describe the interaction between actors and systems in performing the desired solution outcome. The business analyst is an intricate part of delivering projects on time, within budget, and meeting the customer's real needs.
Unfortunately certain employers, supervisors, and project managers are confused on exactly what a business analyst is and try to make the title so ambigous that you could be doing everything or a lot of nothing at all. This is a serious mistake and can produce disastorous consequences, especially with our current economic downturn where value is everything.
