Daily Duties at Time Warner Inc.:

Managed 200+ production SQL Server and Oracle databases in Windows clusters and Oracle Enterprise Linux RAC with 24x7 on call support. Monitored scheduled jobs for backups, reindexing, gathering statistics, AWR reports, data guard status reports, disk space utilization report. Proactively looked out for any operational inefficiency within the environment and worked with the DBA and/or application development team to optimize, make corrections and mitigate risks. Interfaced and collaborated with business owner and external vendors in implementing packaged applications, Communicated and escalated issues as required. Project Management/Team Lead • Project leadership of Time Warner data warehouse infrastructure design and implementation on Oracle 11g RAC and Oracle Enterprise Linux. Implemented and tuned Oracle Streams to replicate data from Operational Systems to Data Warehouse Staging area with an objective of minimal performance impact on production systems. Partnered with application architect to design enterprise data warehouse bus architecture and dimensional data model for employee benefits data mart • Envisioned, planned, budgeted and executed database migration projects to upgrade 400+ databases from Oracle 8.x to 9.x, Oracle 9.x to 10.x, SQL Server 7.0 to 2000, SQL Server 2000 to 2005 in Windows cluster environment with Network Appliance NAS storage devices. • Conducted regular project planning, review and progress monitoring meetings with team members, peers and managers. • Conceptualized and directed an initiative to streamline and enhance database backups and monitoring jobs by standardizing backup procedures and developing configuration file driven dynamic job scheduling. • Led a team of DBAs and developers to design and implement disaster recovery sites for Oracle 9.x/10.x (Data Guard – Physical Standby) SQL Server 2000 (Log Shipping), SQL Server 2005 (Database Mirroring). • Setup and configured Oracle Grid Control to manage and monitor Oracle databases in all life cycle environments, established threshold for performance metrics and alerting mechanism, eliminating a need for daily one hour of manual checks by DBAs. Day to day Database Administration • Minimized unplanned downtime to less than 1% by proactively monitoring databases for performance and availability using custom scripts and third party tools (NetIQ, LogExplorer, Grid Control). • Achieved 70% reduction in backup time and disk/tape space usage by implementing Quest LiteSpeed for SQL Server and custom scripts for compressing and encrypting Oracle backups. • Developed standard procedures for database installation, configuration and patching. • Attained a reputation of database performance guru for improving application performance on numerous occasions and specifically for ten fold increase in performance of a Tax application. • Developed scripts to refresh of databases in stage and development environments using SQL Server restore, EXP, EXPDP or RMAN Duplicate database. • Mentored and cross trained other DBAs and delegated technical issues, tasks and responsibilities to appropriate team members. Research and Development/Infrastructure Design • Reduced data synchronization lag time by 24 hours with Oracle heterogeneous service and SQL Server Linked server implementation enabling applications to have real time access to data in DB2 environment. • Designed and implemented optimum storage layout for Oracle, SQL Server databases, Exchange and network shares on NetApp filer to improve I/O performance by 50% while increasing capacity by 100%. • Enhanced data integrity, performance and maintainability of applications by reviewing and guiding developers on Logical and Physical database design. • Collaborated with Enterprise Backup team to design disk-to-disk-to-tape backup infrastructure using Netapp storage and Veritas Netbackup to reduce backup window by 50%. • Evaluated, recommended and implemented various database management tools and technologies for backup, encryption, capacity planning, bench marking, performance monitoring, disaster recovery, high availability and administration. Compliance/Processes/ Standardization and Documentation Worked with internal audit and control team to identify and mitigate any database compliance issues for SOX applications. Regularly scanned database environments using AppDetective and Oracle Grid Control to uncover latest vulnerabilities and security weaknesses and resolve them. Led database failover and failback tests to validate Disaster Recovery setup and satisfy compliance requirements. • Developed alerting process for auditing database changes and failed logons by enabling Oracle Audit and SQL Server server-side trace and saved the results for auditing purpose. • Developed and implemented standards and best practices guidelines for setting up Oracle in FailSafe and SQL Server in a clustered environment, database security standards for corporate databases based on vendor and third party recommendations, setting up Oracle Data Guard with/without Enterprise Grid Control. • Established database server build standard which included disk layout, backup and monitoring jobs and security standards. • Created database questionnaire to gather information about new application (both in-house and packaged) including capacity, security requirement, transactions, high availability and any other special requirements.
