Daily Duties at Burlington College:
In 1997, I joined the library at Burlington College as a work-study position, as I’d returned to school after a nine-year absence. Within eight months, I’d parleyed that into a staff position as the library manager. At the time, we had just a few hundred books, no budget and an Excel spreadsheet. By the time I left four years later, we had the best cinema collection in the state, one of two transpersonal psychology collections in the country, and an on-line database and tracking system I’d created from scratch. In the process, I wrote grants, secured new physical space, oversaw construction, solicited donations, oversaw the accreditation process, built relationships with other Vermont college libraries and increased our annual budget 40-fold. With no training or specialized skills, when I left to finish my degree, I’d transformed the Burlington College library from a closet into a thriving and vital part of the college experience.
What they like about Burlington College:
You highly value a work environment built on a formal structure, rules, and regulations. You do not enjoy the unpredictability of shifting priorities and deadlines that upset your routine. You require and enjoy direction, input and accountability as part of your work environment. You have a strong need to participate in making key decisions and feel left out if your superiors or co-workers do not seek your input when making decisions. You thrive on providing good customer service to both internal or external customers, and doing so makes you feel good.
