Daily Duties at Saint Joseph Mercy Health System:

Responsible for all operations of community education and wellness programs. Emphasis upon creation of innovative approaches to community-based health behavior change programs. Developed internal worksite wellness program for Saint Joseph Mercy Health System employees. Supervised all implementation, start-up, and operational activities including health risk appraisal, development of targeted programming strategies, worksite-wide marketing and staff involvement campaigns, and data analysis. Participants in the Saint Joseph Mercy Health System wellness program incurred significantly lower health care expenses than non-participants, at all levels of health risk. Oversight of worksite wellness programming for external clients. Services included needs assessment, grant writing where applicable, and development and delivery of a wide range of wellness services among worksites of all sizes. Created new vision and concept of a “community education department”, emphasizing the need for programs to link with both community health status priorities and Health System goals to improve the health of residents in its service area. Created a strategic and operational plan for community education including organizational structure, priorities, goals, objectives, staffing model, budget, reimbursement, evaluation, and marketing/promotion. Secured approval from Executive Team to implement new community education strategy and was promoted to Director of new entity. Developed mobile health program using a specially equipped van and volunteer physician/nursing staff to provide medical services for homeless individuals at various day shelters. Spearheaded strategic plan for disbursement of $10 million in grants to outside agencies serving indigent populations. Co-chaired multi-hospital implementation team. Created standards for review of proposals, disbursement of funds, and evaluation. Pursued PhD. Studies during this time to strengthen skills in research, evaluation, theoretical foundations of health education, program development, and outcome measurement. Notable activities included: “HEALTH STOP” Health Education Center: Developed vision, concept, and strategic plan for retail-oriented health education center located in a major Ann Arbor shopping mall. Plan was in response to increasing executive team concerns regarding subsidization of community education programs. Re-engineered program delivery strategies, employee expectations, and workplace culture to facilitate shift from a poorly reimbursed, largely subsidized model to a model with increasing reliance on private pay and consumerism. Created novel customer service strategies supporting a retail model of service delivery. Oversight of all operational aspects of center. Spearheaded creation of web site providing on-line registration for programs, virtual shopping, and relationship marketing. Built customer base of 4,500 in first two years of operation. Seven-fold increase in physician-referred consultations to outpatient nutrition service from fiscal year 2000 to fiscal year 2001. Revenue increased by 75% from fiscal year 2000 to fiscal year 2001 and 38% from fiscal year 2001 to 2002. “HEALTH EXPLORATION STATION” Interactive Health Education Center: Spearheaded concept for and directed implementation and ongoing operations of an innovative “health museum”, including a walk-through gallery with custom-made exhibits depicting various body systems, nutrition, fitness, and safety topics, and two multi-media classes. Exhibits were designed to support a variety of health education strategies for audiences of all ages. Health Exploration is the first interactive health education center in the State of Michigan, and the only such facility in the United States to date to be housed in an ambulatory center of a hospital. The center emphasizes learning in a multi-media, interactive format that facilitates retention of knowledge and behavior change. Oversight of museum layout, exhibit design, prototyping, selection, exhibit fabrication, curriculum development, and operations. Member of core team that raised $1.5 million in philanthropic funds for construction of museum. Wrote donor proposals, made numerous presentations to prospective donors. Instrumental in securing $300,000 grant from Michigan Department of Community Health to establish Health Exploration Station research programs. Created concept for web site with on-line registration for programs and a web-based interactive animated “trip through the human body”. (www.healthexplorationstation.com) An average of 15,000 children from pre-school to high school age visit the Health Exploration Station annually.
