Climbers' Joblogs at United States Navy:

Seeking entry level job as graphic designer

My name is Anthony Grimaldi, a resident of NYC, a creative artist and designer since I can remember. I have been relentlessly pursuing a permanent position in the graphic design field for many years. After receiving an Associates Degree in graphic design in 2002, I encountered quite a few challenges and difficulties entering the field for the next three years. This did not discourage or dissuade me from pursuing a position in the field in which I was educated and have a natural talent for. The only opportunity then available to work in the graphic design field about 2005 was the US Navy. I lost 30 pounds to qualify and enter the military, went through boot camp at Great Lakes, Michigan during the winter, and boarded the USS Saipan in March, 2006 as a Mass Communications Specialist. I finally achieved my dream to work as a professional graphic designer under circumstances totally beyond all my expectations. For the US Navy, I designed exclusively posters and promotional materials and occasionally freelanced designing tattoos and illustrations for sailors aboard the USS Saipan. I was honorably discharged in April, 2007 due to termination of contract, and was then required to drill monthly as an Active Reservist in the Bronx, NYC up until September, 2009, still performing my duties as a graphic designer. Now totally discharged from the US Navy with some graphic design experience, I am now currently attending The Art Institute-Pittsburgh Online Division to obtain a Bachelor Degree in Web Design and Interactive Media. However, I am not currently working in the field as I encountered the same difficulties as before, hence my currently attending The Art Institute to acquire the absolutely necessary additional skills to increase my chances of succeeding. The purpose of this blog is to communicate with people who may have similar experiences so that we may share insights and advice on how to cope with these challenges and perhaps overcome them, and to additionally communicate with those individuals working in the graphic design field to explore any opportunities and elicit career advice. I appreciate any and all who respond to this blog.
