QUALIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL SUMMARY Mechanical Engineer ACCOMPLISHMENTS Creative Created an adaptive control system that can adjust to a wide range of environments and learn how to optimize the output. Result: This created a smart controller that could control an output regardless of environmental conditions and became the new standard for controllers. Currently all automotive OEMs use this strategy for engine controls, Problem Solving Discovered hydroelastic engine mounts on a small European metro car and redesigned them to work in a full size truck environment. Result: This system achieved "best in class" performance, and the initial release remained unchanged in production for 14 years. Decision Making Remotely determined the cause of a durability failure and devised a plan to resolve it upon returning. Result: The revised plan was restarted, the test plan was completed without incident, the system went into production, and never had another problem. Communication Pioneered a plan for "Simultaneous Engineering" that invited experienced people from manufacturing, vehicle assembly, performance testing and product design to participate in joint design reviews. Result: This created an accelerated and streamlined process that produced a fully designed, tested, and production ready system and components in 1/3 the normal lead time. Supervising Developed a workplan for summer interns to complete with increasing levels of responsibility as they became familiar with company procedures and locations. Result: The interns were amazed at how much they had learned from completing their internships and planned to return after graduation. Analysis Created an analysis tool that quickly and accurately models the critical speed of any complex driveline shaft based on its hardware configuration and material properties. Result: This program made it easy to design the driveshaft based on speed requirements, and included design margins and safety factors. Many of the creative solutions developed resulted in new products that changed industries. For example: The adaptive controller later became known as a smart controller, which works in a wide range of environments by having the controller quickly adapt to changes and then slowly adjust to learn the optimum settings for the new operating point. This smart control technology was adopted for most modern control systems and is currently used on all automotive engine controls. Francis X. Kelly Page Two Magnetic Pulse forming creates a new way to manufacture an aluminum driveshaft without welding. The driveshaft is very light and strong, quick and easy to manufacture, and saves over $60 per unit compared to the two piece steel shaft it replaces. * A hydroelastic engine mount, adapted from a small metro car and redesigned to work in a full size truck environment, created a new NVH standard for engine vibration isolation, and completely revised the engine mount design methodology. * The high frequency hydroelastic mount combines the function of a tuned mass damper and transmission mount. This mount absorbs and dissipates vibration coming through the transmission mount, and reduces highway interior noise levels about 50%. An adaptive version was created to cover multiple frequencies and for tuning.
