CollapseDescription

I started working in high school as a bricklayer and spent nearly three years as a union apprentice bricklayer. After leaving the Mason's Union I worked for a short time as an R and D technician for Conoco Inc.. When I was laid off in a force reduction I spent three semesters in college, got married and worked as a stocking clerk at the local TG&Y store. When my daughter was born I left the clerk job to care for my daughter until my wife finished her degree. In 1986 I joined the U.S. Army for a two year enlistment and in 1988 returned to college on the GI Bill. I graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1991 with a Bachelors degree in Management Information Systems. After college I had a series of short term temporary jobs including substitute teacher, computer typesetter, laborer, and data entry clerk. From 1992 to 1997 I worked for Graybar Electric Company starting as a truckdriver/management trainee and then working in shipping and receiving, retail sales and customer support representative. In 1997 I was hired by Socorro ISD as a computer technician and then promoted to UNIX Systems Administrator. I've been working as a systems administrator for the last 8 years, taking care of a variety of servers and network appliances including Sun Solaris servers, Redhat and Ubuntu Linux servers, Windows 2000 and 2003 servers, Barracuda Spam and Virus filtering appliances, DNSOne dns server appliances and Palisades Systems Screendoor, Packethound and PacketSure web content filtering appliances.

Highlights:

Virtually all of my job skills are self taught or learned on the job. I learned to repair computers in order to qualify for an entry level technician job and learned UNIX to acquire a systems admin position. In order to function in that position I learned to install and maintain a wide variety of enterprise level server software. I'm currently responsible for several mission critical systems including the school district's finance system, student information system, student email system, content filters and proxies and spam and virus filtering systems.
