CollapseDescription

After graduating from Ga Tech in 1978 with an MSEE I worked 15 years (1979-94) with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. There I primarily developed systems (hardware and software) to test viability of, and implement, the (then) proposed Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) standards. I had to study and evaluate the proposed protocols and then translate them into working hard/software. I had pretty much free reign to figure out how to do this, and used Forth as my software design language, and also Forth based Harris RTX2000 cpu. I also had to know, understand, and use reed-solomon hardware chips, and other emerging technologies (such as high-speed AMD serial transceivers). Because what I was doing was mostly R&D, I was able to be very creative, and studied what was on the leading edge of technology, and project what would be usable, or what NASA should fund to make usable, for future space needs. After NASA, when NIST (National Institute of Standards & Technology) started their competition to select a new algorithm to replace DES encryption, I used Forth developed programs to implement the 5 final candidates. I then synthesized what I felt where the top 3 candidates and designed VHDL models to implement them in hardware. My designs were based on asynchronous (versus synchronous) design methodology, which enabled me to design the algorithms as "logic apps" which required no clocking, and are logically the fastest implementation possible. A former colleague of mine from NASA, and I, started a company (3rdeye Technology) to sell our designs, but we could never get funding. But the technology has been thoroughly benchmarked, and is orders faster than other implementations for the same fabrication level. Since 2000 I have been studying and using Open Source Software quite extensively. I'm now a major proponent of the Ruby language, and am getting more into web based design (using Ruby on Rails) and intelligent use of the web. I also have a blog on Free Software Magazine at www.freesoftwaremagazine.com. Since my major strengths are my ability to synthesize disparate pieces of information and translate them into working systems, I seek to work in fields that need these skills. I also am good at writing and explaining technology (et al), and tutor on the side in math and computer use.
