Highlights:

WORK EXPERIENCE April 2005-–March 2008 Assistant Department Editor, CNET News.com, New York, NY • Comanaged eight reporters on the newsroom staff whose coverage included broadband services, wireless technology, telephony, gadgets, online software and services. Budgeted and edited the content produced by these reporters, from blogs to special-coverage packages. • Was named to manage and edit CNET News.com’s contributions to Living with Technology, a monthly consumer-oriented special feature that also includes contributions from CNET Reviews and Downloads.com. Living with Technology launched in April 2007 and is ongoing. • Introduced and developed blog-assignments system for use by CNET News.com’s East Coast morning team, allowing its editors to track each assignment and note its progress, from its initial entry on the newsroom budget to its posting on the Web site. Suggested the system in early March, after the new executive editor of our division announced that CNET News would respond to competition from other tech news sites by posting many more timely, staff-written blogs and less wire copy. Feb. 2003–April 2005 Editing and research consultant, Oakland, CA Provided freelance editing, production and research services to a range of clients, including: • Noverus Financial Services, which produced the Financial Partner personal-finance column offered by Universal Press Syndicate (the column debuted in October 2003) • The Culinary Society of America, an emerging magazine and online service for food and travel enthusiasts • San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, which funded production of a monograph on Oakland abstract artist Naomie Kremer • Modernism art gallery in San Francisco, which produced several artist monographs as well as a two-volume1,250-page retrospective celebrating the gallery’s 25th anniversary. I was editor and production manager for all Modernism book projects. Sept. 2001–Feb. 2003 Managing editor, San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco, CA • Supervised all editorial departments. • Helped oversee paper’s transformation from broadsheet to tabloid format. • Handled the newsroom budget and administrative duties for newsroom contractors and services. • Managed special projects, including the Examiner Bay to Breakers prerace tab, live coverage of the race, pullout sections pegged to other special events, and two multipart investigative news series. Jan. –Sept. 2001: Assistant managing editor, San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco, CA Supervised arts and entertainment coverage and sports-department production. Managed special sections such as the Examiner Bay to Breakers tab and all other expanded and pull-out sections linked to special events and developing news. Sept. 1998–Dec. 2000: Editor, Woodford Press, Emeryville, CA Supervised acquisitions, negotiated authors’ contracts and financing agreements, and handled editing, design and prepress production of Woodford Press titles. I also worked closely with authors, Woodford’s publisher and its marketing director on book promotions. Nov. 1994–Sept. 1998: Deputy features editor, ANG Newspapers, Pleasanton, CA Comanaged ANG’s arts and entertainment coverage, and supervised prepress production of the A&E section for the entire six-paper chain. August 1992–Nov. 1994: Assistant city editor, The Oakland Tribune, Oakland, CA Edited daily copy for front and local sections, and managed long-term writing projects. Sept. 1990–July 1992: Staff writer, business section, ANG Newspapers, Pleasanton, CA Produced daily deadline stories and long features on telecommunications and small business. March 1986–August 1990: Freelance business writer, San Francisco, CA Covered residential and commercial real estate, urban redevelopment, and small business for San Francisco Magazine, The San Francisco Business Times, The San Francisco Business Journal, San Francisco Business, The Northern California Real Estate Journal and other Bay Area publications. July 1982–March 1986: General-assignment feature writer, pop-music critic, The Orlando Sentinel, Orlando, FL After a year of general-assignment feature writing, I was assigned to cover the pop-music industry, with a focus on pop-music culture in Central Florida and South Florida. Also wrote a weekly column about broadcast radio.
